It is the dictionary that gained fame everywhere, and its mention spread on every tongue, to the point that the word "lexicon" almost replaced "dictionary," as many people considered them synonymous, due to its widespread use and extensive dissemination. Its fame reached the horizons, and it deserves that because it gathered qualities that placed it in the position of imamate among dictionaries, making it the relied-upon and referenced source.
Among its features and merits: its abundant content and comprehensive coverage, as it collected within its covers what was scattered of language oddities, and included rare words that were dispersed. It drew from the Mu'jam and the Abwab with additional entries from various dictionaries, totaling two thousand works of fine books, resulting in sixty thousand entries.
Another of its merits: its good brevity and perfect conciseness, its unique method, and its precise approach in regulating terms, listing names of persons, countries, and places with accurate measurements. Thus, it is considered a dictionary of countries and an explanation of ambiguous names of notable figures, comparable to books that clarify names of men.
It also pays attention to mentioning the names of trees, plants, and medicinal herbs, clarifying their benefits and characteristics, and listing many disease names, as well as various other names such as swords, horses, beasts, birds, days, and battles. It seems as if he intended to make his dictionary an encyclopedia, rich with various sciences and insights.
