The explanation of the Aqeedah Al-Osfahaniyah is the great explanation of the Aqeedah that was authored by Sheikh Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Al-Osfahani, the famous Imam of Kalam, who was said to be the most knowledgeable among the scholars of Kalam to have entered the Egyptian lands. It explains it, and Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah clarified the errors in it, both doctrinal and methodological. A verified and reviewed edition based on three manuscript copies.
The explanation of the Aqeedah Al-Osfahaniyah is the great explanation | Sheikh al-Islam Taqi al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abdul Halim ibn Abdul Salam ibn Taymiyyah Al-Harani.
Sheikh al-Islam Abu al-Abbas Taqi al-Din ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah sanctify his soul and illuminate his tomb, was residing in Egypt during the months of the year 712 AH, asking him to explain the Aqeedah authored by Sheikh Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Al-Osfahani, the renowned Imam of Kalam, who was said to be the most knowledgeable among the scholars of Kalam to have entered the Egyptian lands, and to clarify its contents.
He responded and apologized, stating that explaining that speech necessarily involves contradicting some of its purposes due to the rules of Islam, for the truth is more deserving to be followed, and Allah and His Messenger are more deserving of their approval if they are believers. Allah the Most High says: "And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and leave what he forbids you from." (Surah Al-Hashr: 7)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) is more deserving of the believers than themselves. Allah the Most High says: "No, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you, O Muhammad, judge in all disputes between them, then find within themselves no discomfort from what you judge and submit in full submission." (Surah An-Nisa: 65)
And: "O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you dispute over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best and most suitable way." (Surah An-Nisa: 59)
And let it be known that the explanation required below, with Allah’s praise, along with its brevity, contains the essential principles of the roots of religion, which only the great scholars and critics from the masters of the first and the last have truly established. As will be witnessed and testified by the people of justice and fairness among the truthful and the knowledgeable, and Allah the Most High is the guide to the straight path. He is sufficient for us and the best disposer of affairs.
And the first of the mentioned Aqeedah is: "All praise is due to Allah, the true praise, and His blessings upon Muhammad, His Messenger, and His servant, the Creator of the worlds, the Necessary Existent by His own Self, One, All-Knowing, All-Powerful, Alive, Willing, Speaking, Hearing, Seeing. The proof of His existence is the contingent beings, due to the impossibility of their existence by themselves and their impossibility of existing with another possible, necessitating that the effect is independent of everything else, and the dependence of the possible on its cause. The proof of His Oneness is that there is no composition in Him at all; otherwise, He would not be the Necessary Existent by His own Self. It is necessary that He does not have two of the same kind; otherwise, two would exist without distinction, which is impossible. The proof of His knowledge is His creation of things, as it is impossible to create things while being ignorant of them. The proof of His power is His creation of things, which are either by His Self, which is impossible unless He is the world, and each of His creatures is eternal, which is false. It is necessary that He is the Creator by choice, which is the required. The proof of His life is His knowledge and power, as it is impossible for knowledge and power to exist without the Living. The proof of His Will is His specific allocation of things with particularities, and the impossibility of specific allocation without a specific allocator. The proof of His being a Speaker is that He commands us, as He sent the messengers to deliver His commands and prohibitions, and there is no meaning to His being a Speaker except that. The proof of His Hearing and Seeing is the sensory evidences. The proof of the Prophethood of the prophets is the miracles. The proof of the Prophethood of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the inimitable Qur'an in its composition and meaning.
Then we say: everything that Muhammad (peace be upon him) informed us about of the punishment of the grave, the questioning by Munkar and Nakir, and other states of the Day of Resurrection, the Path, the Scale, intercession, Paradise, and Hell, is true because it is possible, and he, the truthful, has informed us of it. It follows that his truthfulness is established, and Allah is the grantor of success."
He responded, may Allah the Most High be pleased with him: "All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. What is in this speech from the reports that the Creator of the worlds is the Necessary Existent by Himself, and that He is One, All-Knowing, All-Powerful, Alive, Willing, Speaking, Hearing, Seeing, is true, with no doubt in it. Likewise, what is in it from the affirmation of the Prophethood of the prophets, peace be upon them, and the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him), and that it is obligatory to believe in everything He informed us about, such as the punishment of the grave, the questioning by Munkar and Nakir, and other states of the Day of Resurrection, the Path, the Scale, intercession, Paradise, and Hell, is true. These sacred names mentioned for Allah, some are found in the Book of Allah, such as His Name the One, the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful, the Alive, the Hearing, and the Seeing."
Allah the Most High says: "And your God is One God. There is no deity except Him, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 163)
And: "The Most High, the Most Great, the Possessor of the Throne, the One who sends down the Spirit from His command upon whom He wills of His servants, to warn of the Day of Meeting, the Day they come forth hurriedly from the graves as if they were, to be presented before their Lord, the One, the Almighty." (Surah Al-Anbiya: 88-90)
And: "Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 255)
And: "Indeed, Allah is over all things competent." (Surah An-Nisa: 78)
And: "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing." (Surah Ash-Shura: 11)
And similar to this in the Qur'an.
