Introduction to the investigation
All praise be to Allah, we praise Him, seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and from the bad deeds. Whoever Allah guides, there is no misleader for him, and whoever He misguides, there is no guide for him. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
As for what follows:
Indeed, Allah, Glorified and Exalted, knew what is upon the children of Adam from much disagreement and division, and the divergence of minds and morals, as they were created from innate dispositions of discord, and tested with the branching of thoughts and ideas. So Allah sent messengers as bearers of good news and warners, and clarifiers for mankind of what misleads them and guides them, and revealed with them the Book in truth to judge among people in what they differed about. And He commanded them to adhere to it, fearing division in religion, and urged them, when disputes arose, to return to it and to His clear Messenger (1).
And the Shariah came — to achieve this — with many corroborating texts from the Book and Sunnah, urging adherence and forbidding innovation. There is no doubt that those who follow the footsteps of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and his companions are the people of Sunnah, because they are on that path in which no incident has occurred, and the incidents and innovations only happened after the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and his companions (1). And still, the scholars — may Allah have mercy on their dead and preserve our living — praise this great structure by spreading every Sunnah, eradicating every innovation, and repelling the followers of desires and their falsehoods. Sometimes through knowledge and education, other times through rebuttal and warning, and at other times through abandonment and reprimand, and at times through compilation and categorization.
If we wanted to exhaustively detail this, and enumerate its forms and types, our article would be lengthy, and our situation would worsen. But this is a passing note to clarify the methodology of these scholars in dealing with innovators and followers of desires. Among these eminent scholars who authored works to refute innovations and dismantle heresies and misguidance is Imam Abu Bakr Al-Tartushi, may Allah have mercy on him. He authored the book "Al-Hawadith wal-Bid‘" (The Incidents and Innovations), which is considered a fundamental book in its field. Many authors and scholars have quoted from it.
Due to the authenticity of this book, its great benefit, and its significant usefulness, I have seen fit to republish it in a well-prepared scholarly edition — God willing — to bring its fruits closer and increase the ways of benefiting from it. I ask Allah, the Most High, to make this work — and all my works — sincerely for His Face, and to reserve it for me on the Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit. Indeed, He is Hearing and Responding.
