Summary of spelling rules Ibrahim bin Salim About the book This is a comprehensive summary in the science of spelling, needed by intelligent students, and cannot be dispensed with by writers and literati. The author, Sheikh Ibrahim bin Salim – may Allah have mercy on him – aimed for easy phrasing, good arrangement, and titled it: "Summary of Spelling Rules." And spelling: the science that a person must memorize to avoid mistakes in Arabic writing. Its subject involves four matters: • Letters that change, such as the hamza in: "Mu'min" and "Bīr," and the soft alif in: "Al-Fata Sa'a." • Words that are separated, like: "Inna ma qultuhu sawab," and words that are connected, like: "Innamal a'malu binniyat." • Letters that are added, such as the alif in "Mi'ah," and the waw in "Ulī" meaning "possessors." • Letters that are omitted, such as the alif in "That" and the waw in "Dawud." Its benefit: to protect a person from mistakes in Arabic writing. Its compiler: scholars of Basra and Kufa, deriving its rules from the sciences of syntax and morphology.
