The Pearl and Coral in what the two sheikhs agreed upon | Mohammed Fawad Abdul Baqi
The book The Pearl and Coral in what the two sheikhs agreed upon by Mohammed Fawad Abdul Baqi is one of the books of Hadith that collected the agreed-upon Hadith in the authentic collections, the size of the book is 700 pages and it was printed in three parts then collected in one volume.
This is a book from the books of the Noble Hadith, in which the author collected the mutually agreed Hadith in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, totaling 2006 Hadith (some sources mention 1906 but what the author stated in the introduction of the book is 2006).
He selected his texts from Sahih Bukhari and from the narrations that are closest in wording to the text found in Sahih Muslim.
After each Hadith, it shows its location in Sahih Bukhari by mentioning the name of the book and the chapter title with their numbers.
As for the order of the book, it followed the order of Sahih Muslim, taking from it the names of its fifty-four books, the first of which is the Book of Faith and the last is the Book of Tafsir.
Each book is divided into chapters, as is the case in Sahih Muslim, where the number of these chapters is 1,293.
The commitment to the text of Bukhari was at the request of Mohammed Al-Halabi, as mentioned in Abdul Baqi’s introduction after praising Allah and praying for His Messenger:
"Afterward — this is the book 'The Pearl and Coral, in what the two sheikhs agreed upon' — the imams of Hadith: Abu Abdullah Mohammed ibn Ismail ibn Ibrahim ibn Al-Mughirah ibn Bardaizbah Al-Ju’fi, born in 194 AH, and died in 256 AH, and Abu Al-Husayn Muslim ibn Al-Hajjaj ibn Muslim Al-Qushayri Al-Nisaburi, born in 204 AH, and died in 261 AH."
The publisher and the printer is:
Sayyid Mohammed Al-Halabi, director of Dar Iḥyaa’ al-Kutub al-‘Arabiyya.
He obligated me to mention the text of the Bukhari Hadith that most closely matches the text of the Hadith in which Muslim agrees with him.
This obligation from his side and my commitment made it difficult and arduous.
And enough for me to indicate the difficulty of executing this commitment that none of those who authored or said that this Hadith is mutually agreed upon ever adhered to such a strict condition.
Because Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, the world’s teacher in the science of Hadith, stated that the agreement of Muslim with Bukhari means his agreement on the derivation of the original Hadith from its companion, even if some discrepancies occur in some contexts.
And Imam An-Nawawi, the explainer of Sahih Muslim, when he wrote the book "Forty Nawawi" and started it with the Hadith of intentions, and indicated that it is from what the two sheikhs agreed upon, did not mention the closest texts of Bukhari to Muslim but mentioned the first text that Bukhari narrated in his Sahih, and showed some discrepancies in the context with the Hadith narrated by Muslim.
This hardship that I face, and almost prevents me from fulfilling this commitment, was alleviated by my two books: "Jami’ Masanid Sahih Al-Bukhari" and "Qurrat Al-‘Aynayn fi Atar Al-Sahihain".
From the second book, I was guided to the mutually agreed Hadiths, counted and compiled.
And from the first, I found the text that the publisher obligated me to mention, and I committed to that.
Abdul Baqi emphasized the importance of the book based on what Ibn Al-Salah mentioned regarding the sections of the Sahih, and that what is agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim — as many scholars of Hadith say — is "Sahih Muttafaq Alayh," which they use to mean the agreement of Bukhari and Muslim, not the consensus of the Ummah on it; but the consensus of the Ummah on it is a necessary consequence of that, as the Ummah accepts what they agree upon.
The three sources of the book:
The book practically relied on three sources: the text from Bukhari, the arrangement from Sahih Muslim, and the chapters are those set by An-Nawawi in his explanation of Sahih Muslim.
Abdul-Muhsin Al-‘Abbad commented on the author Abdul Baqi by saying, "He is not a scholar, but he is organized, meaning he has organization, attention to indexing, and perseverance in this field... He paid great attention to Sahih Muslim, with multiple numbering systems: numbering based on repetition, and numbering without repetition. It was published in four volumes carefully edited by Fawad Abdul Baqi, and a fifth volume was added, containing ten indexes all related to Sahih Muslim. He served Sahih Muslim with excellent and great service.
Similarly, the numbering of Bukhari’s Hadiths and the numbering in Fath Al-Bari, with the Salafi edition, is the numbering of Mohammed Fawad Abdul Baqi.
The book The Pearl and Coral was based on the work of three people: the wording is from Bukhari, and the text in The Pearl and Coral is the wording of Bukhari, and the arrangement is that of Muslim.
The chapters he included are not from Muslim or Bukhari but are from An-Nawawi’s explanation of Muslim, where An-Nawawi arranged and titled the chapters in the footnotes.
And Muslim, may Allah have mercy on him, did not set chapters in his Sahih but only compiled books."
Abdul Baqi began the book with the narration of the Hadith:
"The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: Do not lie upon me, for whoever lies upon me intentionally, let him prepare his seat in the fire."
