Forwarded by the scholar Ibn Manzur, Lisan al-Arab - 8 volumes - Lisan al-Arab 8/1
About the book: The author of the dictionary is Muhammad bin Makram bin Ali, and it is said Radhwan bin Ahmad bin Abi al-Qasim bin Habqa bin Manzur al-Ansari al-Afriki al-Misri, Jamal al-Din Abu al-Fadl, owner of Lisan al-Arab in language, whom we turn its pages and who collected in it Ibn Manzur between refinement, and the authentic, and the correct, his notes, and the Jumhura, and the End.
He compiled, lived, narrated, and greatly abridged many of the extensive books of literature such as Al-Aghani, Al-Aqd, Al-Dhakhira, and Ibn Al-Baytar’s vocabulary, and it was reported that his abridgments are five hundred volumes. He was a noble, virtuous chief in literature, eloquent in composition, narrated by Al-Subki and Al-Dhahabi, and he said he was unique in the chains of narration. He was knowledgeable in grammar, language, history, and writing, and he abridged the history of Damascus to about a quarter of its original. He was a Shia without rejection.
Returning to the dictionary, the reader sees that Ibn Manzur’s compilation in this dictionary includes Al-Sahh, Al-Jawhari, and the notes of Ibn Bari, Al-Tahdhib of Al-Azhari, Al-Muhkam of Ibn Sīdah, Al-Jumhura of Ibn Duraid, and Al-Nihaya of Ibn Al-Athir, among others.
His collection of these linguistic books in this dictionary makes it sufficient to replace other language books, as none of them have reached what he achieved. It is remarkable in his narration, refinement, editing, and arrangement.
It is a book of language, grammar, morphology, jurisprudence, and literature, and an explanation of the noble Hadith and an interpretation of the Quran.
The compiler arranged it in the order of Sahihs in chapters and sections (the alphabetical order of dictionaries), aiming to adorn it with noble news and beautiful effects, in addition to what it contains of Quranic verses, speeches on the miracles of the Noble Reminder, so that it is based on the verses, news, effects, proverbs, and poetry, solving and concluding it.
Alongside that, he preface his dictionary with a chapter that includes the interpretation of the disjointed letters that appeared at the beginning of the surahs of the Noble Quran, because they are pronounced separately, unfamiliar, and irregular. Each word is returned to its chapter, making a separate chapter for it.
His goal with this preface is to bless the interpretation of Allah’s speech, and secondly, because these letters, when they are at the beginning of the book, are closer to every reader than the end, as the usual reader begins from the start to understand its arrangement and the purpose of its compiler.
