Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and after:
It did not occur to me at any time to write about circumcision.. but the motivation to write this article is what was recently published (March and May 1990) in the most famous American medical magazines about circumcision.
One might be surprised to learn that 61%-68% of American children are circumcised after birth.. and Jews in America are few.. as are Muslims.. so Americans who are Christians are circumcised.. why is this? and we know that Christians do not practice circumcision?.. and we also know that Christian Europe was opposed to circumcision.. and when I read that the most famous pediatric doctors in America call for the necessity of performing circumcision routinely at every birth, I said to myself: Praise be to Allah, who revealed to them the benefits of a trait from the traits of fitrah, which the Messenger - peace be upon him - told us about. And by reading what was published on the topic of circumcision in modern medical magazines, there are more than a hundred articles, all published in recent years in the most famous American and international medical journals.
Circumcision in previous religions:
In the authentic collections of Bukhari and Muslim, from Abu Huraira, who said: The Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - said: "Ibrahim was circumcised at the age of eighty with the Qadduam."
And Ibn al-Qayyim said: (It has been narrated that Ibrahim was the first to be circumcised, and circumcision continued after him among the prophets and their followers, even in Christ, he was circumcised, and Christians acknowledge this and do not deny it, just as they acknowledge that he prohibited pork.)
He paid special attention to Jewish circumcision, as it appears in Genesis:
"This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised."
It seems that circumcision is a Christian practice, but Christians have distorted the texts of their scriptures and abandoned its teachings. Circumcision is mentioned in the Gospel of Barnabas:
"Jesus answered: Truly I say to you, a dog is better than an uncircumcised man."
Circumcision in Islam:
Several hadiths about circumcision have been narrated in the Sunnah.
Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah - peace be upon him - say: "Fitrah has five: circumcision, trimming the mustache, cutting the nails, plucking the armpit hair, and removing pubic hair."
Imam Ahmad narrated a hadith from Shaddad ibn Aws, raised:
(Circumcision is a Sunnah for men and a dignity for women).
What do American pediatricians say about circumcision?
Professor Wisewell, who is the head of the Department of Neonatal Diseases at Washington Military Hospital, wrote an article in the March 1990 issue of American Family Physician, stating:
"I was one of the strongest opponents of circumcision in 1975, and I participated in efforts to reduce the rate of circumcision at that time.
But in the early 1980s, scientific studies showed an increase in urinary tract infections among uncircumcised children.
However, I did not suggest making circumcision routine then.
But.. after careful review and an objective study of research and studies published in medical journals about circumcision.. I reached a different conclusion.. and I became an advocate for making circumcision a routine procedure for every child.
Not only that, but the report issued in 1989 by the American Academy of Pediatrics contradicted the report from 1970, and it retracted its opposition to circumcision. It recently confirmed the great medical benefits of circumcision in children."
Indeed, attitudes and opinions have changed.. and those who were once vehemently opposed to circumcision have become among its most enthusiastic supporters.
Human instinct has returned to prove itself anew — it is the innate nature that does not change over ages:
(And Allah's natural way with which He created mankind).
The professor concluded his interesting article by saying:
"On March 8, 1988, the members of the California Medical Association unanimously voted that circumcision of the newborn is an effective health measure.
I have reversed my long-standing opposition to circumcision and welcomed the decision of the California Medical Association."
Circumcision and genital hygiene:
Dr. (Shwain) wrote in his main article in the journal England New Medicine of Journal in 1990:
(There is no doubt that circumcision of the newborn facilitates the hygiene of the genital organs throughout life and under various environmental conditions.
Circumcision prevents the accumulation of pathogenic germs under the foreskin during childhood.)
Dr. (Shwain), one of the most famous pediatricians in the world, emphasizes the importance of genital hygiene in preventing penile cancer:
(Keeping good hygiene in the genital area is difficult, not only in underdeveloped regions but even in a major and developed country like the United States, which includes many races with common differences in social customs and traditions.
Even in a smaller, more developed country with a majority of one race, scientific evidence indicates that genital hygiene remains poor.
A study conducted on non-circumcised British schoolchildren found poor hygiene in 70% of these children.
Another study from Denmark shows adhesions in the foreskin in 63% of non-circumcised children at age six.)
This is confirmed by a senior scientific team in America that was established to study circumcision.
Islam provided a remedy for this problem: it is circumcision, which the Messenger of Humanity - peace be upon him - guided us to.
Allah said:
(So set your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [It is] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people.) [Ar-Rum: 30]
Circumcision and urinary tract infections:
Several recent scientific studies published in 1989 confirmed that the likelihood of urinary tract infections in non-circumcised children is 39 times higher than in circumcised children.
A study conducted on more than 400,000 children found that Professor Wizewell observed an increased rate of urinary tract infections in male children due to infections in uncircumcised children.
Researchers estimated that if circumcision were not performed in the United States, there would be an additional twenty thousand cases of pyelonephritis and nephritis.
The British renowned magazine The Lancet published in 1989:
(Circumcising infants in the early period of life can reduce the rate of urinary tract infections in children by 90%).
Circumcision and penile cancer:
The British medical journal B.M.J. published in 1987 an article about this disease stating:
(That penile cancer is very rare among Jews, and in Islamic countries where circumcision is performed during childhood).
Penile cancer is a significant problem in several countries, accounting for 12-22% of all male cancers in China, Uganda, and Puerto Rico.
The National Cancer Institute published a study confirming that penile cancer is transmitted through sexual contact, and indicated that sexual contact with prostitutes leads to this cancer.
The American Journal of Diseases of Children recently published an article stating:
(That an uncircumcised man is at risk of developing penile cancer, whereas it can be prevented if circumcision is performed at birth).
Yes.. this is what medical scientists today confirm, and this is what Islam has decreed fourteen centuries ago!
Circumcision and sexually transmitted diseases:
In an interview published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1990, it states:
(Circumcision helped prevent balanitis and protected against sexually transmitted diseases among American soldiers during World War II, and during the Korean and Vietnam wars).
A recent study from Australia confirmed a clear increase in four sexually transmitted diseases among uncircumcised men: genital herpes, candidiasis, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
Circumcision and AIDS:
(Circumcision protects against AIDS) — this is the topic of a recent article (1989) published in the American journal Science.
The article cited three scientific studies conducted in America and Africa.
These studies confirmed a decrease in AIDS infection rates among the uncircumcised.
Isn’t this astonishing! Even those who dare to disobey Allah through sexual misconduct find a trait of fitrah that can ward off the evil of this malignant disease.
But do not think that if a person is circumcised he is safe from AIDS.. it occurs in both circumcised and uncircumcised, and its incidence is lower among the circumcised.
Thus, scientific research proves that what the chosen Prophet brought is the truth, and there is no change to Allah’s natural way with which He created mankind.
May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our master Muhammad, and all praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
