And the book of Abu al-Harith al-Halabi al-Atiri
Introduction
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
Indeed, praise be to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, ask for His forgiveness, and seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and from the bad deeds. Whoever Allah guides, there is no misleader for him, and whoever He misguides, there is no guide for him. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
As for what follows: The foundation of the call of the messengers—peace and blessings be upon them—is the knowledge of Allah—glorified be He—by His names, attributes, and actions.
Then follow two great fundamentals: One is the recognition of the path that leads to Him; and it is His Shariah: containing His commands and prohibitions. The second: recognizing the travelers—after reaching Him—what they have of endless bliss and the eye comfort that never ceases.
And these two fundamentals are subordinate to the first fundamental, and built upon it; so the most knowledgeable of people of Allah are those who follow the path leading to Him, and the most knowledgeable of them by the state of the travelers upon arrival to Him. For this reason, Allah—glorified and exalted—named what He revealed to His Messenger: a spirit—so that true life depends on it—and a light—so that guidance depends on it. Allah—blessed and exalted—said: "He casts the spirit from His command upon whom He wills of His servants" (Surat Ash-Shu'ara: 52), in two places in His Book. And He said: "And thus We have inspired to you a spirit from Our command. You knew not what the Book was, nor the faith, but We made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, you guide to a straight path" (Surat Ash-Shura: 52).
So there is no spirit except in what He has brought, and no light except in being illuminated by it; so it is life, light, protection, healing, salvation, and security. And Allah sent His messengers with guidance and the religion of truth; so there is no guidance except in what they brought, and Allah does not accept from anyone a religion he follows except that it agrees with His religion. And He has purified Himself from what His servants describe Him—except what the messengers described Him with—so He said: "Exalted is Allah above what they describe, except the righteous servants of Allah" (Surat As-Saffat: 159-160). No one from the predecessors said: They are the messengers (1). And Allah—glorified be He—said: "Indeed, Allah—glorified and exalted—is above what they describe, and peace be upon the messengers, and all praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds" (Surat As-Saffat: 180-182); so He purified Himself from what His creation describes Him with, then sent peace upon the messengers—because of the safety of what they described Him with of deficiencies and flaws—and then He praised Himself for His exclusive attributes deserving of perfect praise (2).
From this origin, many of the early scholars and leaders of the past nation authored numerous writings in affirming the scientific foundations upon which the chapters of Allah’s names and attributes are built—within the principles of the pure Salafi creed—by strengthening their pillars and establishing their fundamentals; in various writings—ranging from small parts to large books. Among these scholars and great imams were two eminent sheikhs and two great scholars: Sheikh al-Islam Imam Ibn Taymiyyah—who died in the year 728 AH—and his student, the eminent scholar Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah—who died in 751 AH. They authored, compiled, explained, and organized much material—what has had a great impact and abundant goodness, which we still benefit from to this day—more than eight centuries after their passing! May Allah have mercy on them abundantly, grant them the reward, and make their remembrance everlasting. May Allah gather us and them—along with the righteous servants of Allah—in His Paradise, covered by His forgiveness, and included in His mercy.
And this book—I present today to my brothers, students of knowledge from the people of the Sunnah, and callers to the methodology of the Salaf—is: "Al-Kafiya Al-Shafiya" in defending the saved sect. It is a unique book in its kind, not patterned after any other, nor similar; its author did not omit from the fundamentals of the creed of the Salaf except that he included it, and he elaborated on its mention, and he did not leave—may Allah have mercy on him—any major innovation or serious heresy except that he addressed it, refuted it, and responded strongly against its doubts and misguidances. So this book—its organization—resembles the comprehensive encyclopedia of the beliefs of Ahl al-Sunnah, and the refutation of their enemies among the ignorant and the misguided of the nation.
I have looked into the editions and publications of the book (1): and I saw them competing among themselves—each claiming to be the most complete and least flawed! The greatest loss and distortion!! So I vowed—by the success of my Lord—to publish it anew, with soundness—God willing—certainly; hoping from my Lord—glorified and exalted—that He grants me sincerity in speech and action, guides my righteousness, and strengthens my certainty against my own soul; indeed, He—glorious is His Majesty—is the Protector and Capable of that.
And may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his companions.
And our last supplication is: All praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
