The explanation of Abdul Muhsin Al-Zamalal, Al-Alaa Al-Rabbaniya, with the explanation of the Forty Hadiths of Nawawi. Part of the introduction: Indeed, caring for the roots in Sharia is one of the greatest foundations of seeking knowledge. The scholars — may Allah have mercy on them — have established rules and principles to facilitate the student of knowledge in acquiring it. Their works in this regard have varied, and the best and most deserving thing a student of knowledge should focus on after caring for the Book of Allah is what comes from the classified books on the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah. Among the advice given by scholars to the student of knowledge is to pay attention to manners and ethics that help him in action. So, manners in knowledge mean acting upon it and teaching it. The student of knowledge, in particular, should be a role model and example in character and manners, and should not be harsh or rude. As is well known, the companions, before Islam in the Jahiliyyah, were harsh and severe. Then, when they embraced Islam and believed, each of them would hear a verse from the Book of Allah, shed tears, and continue doing so for a long time. It might be thought they were ill, but what they had was nothing but fear and faith in their hearts. Among the most important texts classified in hadith that help achieve this meaning are the Forty Hadiths of Nawawi. The Imam, Hafiz Abu Zakariya Yahya ibn Sharf Al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, did well in these forty which he compiled. He gathered them from hadiths that are fundamental in rulings, manners, and ethics. They contain comprehensive words, and he took them from the original collection of Abu Amr Othman ibn Abdul Rahman Al-Shahrzuri, famous as Ibn Asal, who died in the year 643 AH — may Allah have mercy on him. It consisted of about twenty-six hadiths, which he took and added to complete to forty-two hadiths. Then Ibn Rajab added eight more hadiths, making a total of fifty hadiths, all of which are comprehensive in rulings and manners — may Allah have mercy on all of them. Gathering such reports is of great benefit to the nation in knowledge and action.
