The Scholar's Need to Know the Meanings of the Words of Al-Minhaj is a book in jurisprudence by Sheikh Shams al-Din Muhammad bin Khatib Al-Sharani (d. 977 AH). It explains the book Minhaj al-Talibin by Imam Al-Nawawi (d. 676 AH). It is one of the most important and famous books of the Shafi'i school, and the most widely studied among jurisprudence students of different schools; it is a comprehensive book of rulings on worship and transactions, distinguished by precise wording, smooth style, and good arrangement.
Al-Sharani said in the introduction of the book:
"Since Allah – Glorified and Exalted – made easy for me, and He is the grantor and bestower, and I was free from explaining the commentary on the annotation, for the great scholar and spiritual leader Abu Ishaq Al-Shirazi, may Allah sanctify his soul and illuminate his grave, which includes many important explanations and writings, and its benefits and precious insights, I praised Allah – Glorified and Exalted – for completing it, and I asked Him for more of His grace and favor. Then some of my friends asked me to make a similar work following the methodology of the great spiritual leader of the Shafi'i school: Muhyi al-Din Al-Nawawi. I hesitated for a while because I knew I was not qualified for that matter, until Allah made it easy for me to visit the Prophet – peace be upon him – and the other prophets, and the family and companions all together, in the first year of nine hundred and fifty-five.
I sought Allah’s help in His presence, after I prayed two rak'ahs in His garden, and asked Him to ease my matter. Allah – Glorified and Exalted – opened my chest for that. When I returned from my journey, and that ease continued with me, I began explaining in a way that clarifies the meanings of the foundations of Imam Al-Nawawi’s methodology as it is, and expresses the understood meaning with words that remove the harshness from understanding, reveal the hidden treasures of its core, and show the concealed in its secrets, free from verbosity and lengthening, containing proof and explanation, clarifying what the later scholars and companions rely on, a pillar for the mufti and others seeking correctness, well-organized, thorough in branches and roots, medium in size, and the best of matters is its moderation, neither neglecting nor exaggerating.
This, and the tongue of deficiency in praising it is short, and Allah knows the corrupt from the rectifier, and to Him is the return.
Since his reading with his reading removes fatigue and hardship from him, and negates his poverty of need, and brings him comfort and wealth.
I named it: "The Rich One in Need of Knowing the Meanings of the Words of Al-Minhaj," and I ask Allah – Glorified and Exalted – that it be a work associated with sincerity, acceptance, and approval, and a deed that is accepted, pleasing, and pure, counted among the good deeds. Its mention is spread as its origin was spread in every gathering, and its benefit reaches every devotee and wanderer.
May it reach me, my companions, my loved ones, and the Muslims with the best of this world and the Hereafter, our hope.
And may our words and deeds end with happiness. Indeed, He is near and responsive.
And my success is only from Allah. I rely on Him and turn to Him.
