Al-Muwatta was the book of Malik, the best and most beneficial and most influential of all the books written until that time. Caliph Abu Jaafar Al-Mansur (d. 158 AH) turned to Imam Malik during the Hajj season, asking him to compile a book on jurisprudence that gathers scattered knowledge and organizes it according to scientific standards he set, saying: "O Abu Abdullah, put forth jurisprudence and record books from it, and avoid the hardships of Abdullah bin Omar, the leniency of Abdullah bin Abbas, the outliers of Abdullah bin Mas'ud, and aim for the middle of matters, and what the Imams and the Companions agreed upon, so that God willing, people will follow your work and your writings, and spread them across the cities, and entrust them to others not to oppose them." And Al-Mansur asked Imam Malik to unite people around his book, but he did not respond to that, which shows his knowledge and fairness, and he said: "People have gathered and seen things we have not seen," from the sciences of Hadith by Hafiz Ibn Kathir. Statements of scholars about Al-Muwatta: Imam Al-Shafi’i said: "There is no book after the Book of Allah more beneficial than the book of Malik bin Anas." And this statement was before the appearance of Sahih Al-Bukhari. Al-Bukhari said: "The most authentic chains of narration are: Malik from Nafi’ from Ibn Umar," and this chain often appears in Al-Muwatta. Al-Qadi Abu Bakr bin Al-Arabi, in his explanation of Al-Tirmidhi, said: "Al-Muwatta is the origin and the essence, and the book of Al-Bukhari is the second origin in this field, and all others, like Muslim and Al-Tirmidhi, are built upon them."
