Summary:
The book "Al-Istidhkar li Madhahib 'Ulama' al-Amṣar fima Tammana al-Muwatta' min Ma'ani al-Ra'y wa al-Athar," is a comprehensive book in which Imam ibn Abd al-Barr, may Allah have mercy on him, explained the Muwatta, to alert to the meanings of the hadiths and what relates to them from jurisprudence. The importance of the book lies in it being a rare book in the principles of jurisprudence and comparative jurisprudence, especially in the first three centuries during which jurisprudence originated, developed, and its rules were solidified. It is distinguished by the author's extensive mastery of his tools: a sound understanding of the Book of Allah, deep knowledge of hadith and its sciences, its causes, authentic and weak hadiths, wide familiarity with the sayings of the Companions, Tabi‘un, and followers, and their methods of reasoning. He was endowed with bright, inspiring, and enlightened thinking, independence of opinion, integrity free from vile fanaticism, firmness in speaking the truth even if it contradicts his school. He did not leave a scholar from the Salaf nor a school of thought without citing it in the issue he discusses.
Al-Istidhkar encompassed more than sixty thousand hadiths, covering most of the hadiths of the Sunnah, rulings, and jurisprudence. He used this hadith wealth to regulate Islamic jurisprudence. The book was arranged according to the Muwatta.
The book "Al-Istidhkar" is unique in its many scientific additions and benefits, whether hadith, jurisprudential, or linguistic. The researcher, along with a distinguished team of talented students, exerted exceptional effort in collecting manuscript copies of the book, tracking them in the collections of global libraries, and attempting to produce a text that he strived to be the one written and approved by the author. They compared the copies and rechecked them multiple times with careful examination of the text, and the preference among the readings was based on reasoning, experience, and the author's style.
This book is distinguished by having an index of the fatwas of jurists from the Companions, Tabi‘un, and followers, in addition to collecting everything Ibn Abd al-Barr said about the jurisprudence of Umar ibn al-Khattab, رضي الله عنه, Aisha, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, رضي الله عنهم, and other Tabi‘un and school founders.
