Precautionary tips - Adverse effects, including those related to joints and surrounding tissues, increase in children; therefore, ciprofloxacin should not be considered a preferred medication for children. - In children, fluoroquinolones are not considered first-line treatment routinely, but after risk-benefit assessment, they may be a reasonable alternative in cases where no safe and effective alternative is available (e.g., anthrax, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis). - Not given to patients with hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin. - Long-term use may lead to fungal or bacterial infections. - Use with caution in patients with renal impairment. - Adverse effects (such as tendon rupture) may increase in elderly patients. - Hemolytic reactions (rare) may occur with fluoroquinolone use in patients with G6PD deficiency. - Fluoroquinolones may worsen muscle weakness in patients with myasthenia gravis; therefore, avoid ciprofloxacin in patients with a known history of myasthenia. - If a dose is missed, be prepared to inform or show what was taken, when it happened, and seek immediate medical care.
