Tenormin 50mg tablets 28 tablets the active substance atenolol what are the uses of Tenormin? High blood pressure used alone or with other medications for the treatment of angina pectoris, and after myocardial infarction. What are the contraindications of Tenormin? Hypersensitivity to beta blockers, bradycardia, sinoatrial node dysfunction, heart block more than first degree (except patients with pacemakers), cardiogenic shock, decompensated heart failure, pulmonary edema (fluid accumulation in the lungs), pregnancy. What are the side effects of Tenormin? Cardiac and vascular symptoms: bradycardia, hypotension, chest pain, edema (fluid accumulation), heart failure, second and third degree atrioventricular block, Raynaud's phenomenon. Central nervous system symptoms: dizziness, blurred vision, loss of concentration, hallucinations, insomnia, nightmares, depression. Gastrointestinal symptoms: constipation, diarrhea, nausea. Rare symptoms: rash, worsening of psoriasis, impotence, muscle cramps, acute urinary retention, nasal congestion, scalp tingling, hypersensitivity reactions, liver function abnormalities, alopecia, cardiac arrest, liver injury. What are the precautions for using Tenormin? Used with caution in diabetics: beta receptor blockers may hide important symptoms of severe hypoglycemia (such as shivering) except sweating, hyperthyroidism cases: may hide clinical signs, and aggravate hypertension. And in cases of thyrotoxic poisoning, the patient should be monitored when suddenly stopping atenolol as it may worsen angina, myocardial infarction, and arrhythmias. Patients should be advised to limit physical activity. In cases of heart attack, there is a risk of provoking coronary artery spasm. Warning against sudden discontinuation: in patients with angina or coronary artery disease, stopping atenolol suddenly may worsen these conditions, cause ventricular arrhythmias, and myocardial infarction. Patients should be monitored and warned against abruptly stopping beta blockers. Elderly: dose reduction is necessary. Kidney and liver disease: dose reduction is necessary. Pregnant women: not given, as it may cross the placenta and affect the fetus. Nursing mothers: may be excreted in breast milk. What are the drug interactions of Tenormin? If taken with calcium channel blockers such as verapamil, nifedipine, diltiazem, there is an increased risk of bradycardia, hypotension, and heart failure. Verapamil and diltiazem are not recommended with atenolol. If taken with clonidine to lower blood pressure, there is a risk of increased blood pressure if clonidine is stopped. To avoid this, atenolol should be discontinued several days before gradually stopping clonidine. There is an increased risk of bradycardia if atenolol is combined with: digoxin, antiarrhythmic drugs such as amiodarone, disopyramide, or quinidine. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like indomethacin reduce the blood pressure-lowering effect. If taken with ergotamine or dihydroergotamine, there may be an increased risk of peripheral circulation problems (cold hands and feet). Atenolol has an additional effect when combined with other blood pressure-lowering drugs, especially those used to treat hypertension. Other blood pressure-lowering drugs include: alpha blockers like prazosin, ACE inhibitors like captopril, calcium channel blockers like nifedipine, clonidine, diuretics such as furosemide, bendroflumethiazide, nitrates like glyceryl trinitrate, some antidepressants like amitriptyline, phenelzine, some antipsychotics, alprostadil, baclofen, benzodiazepines like temazepam, barbiturates such as phenobarbital. Antibiotics (rifampicin) may reduce blood levels of atenolol. What are the doses of Tenormin and methods of use? Adults: Hypertension: 25-50 mg once daily, may increase to 100 mg/day. Doses >100 mg are not preferred and do not add benefit. Angina: 50 mg once daily, may increase to 100 mg/day, some patients may need 200 mg/day. After myocardial infarction: 100 mg/day or 50 mg twice daily for 6-9 days post-infarction. Elderly: Hypertension: start with the lowest effective dose, and titrate until the desired response is achieved. What are the pharmaceutical forms of Tenormin? Tablets: 50 mg, 100 mg.
