The Story Behind the Work | Kawther Alzwaied

The story of this painting began in July 2025, at a time when I was trying to find my way back to drawing and, through it, back to myself. I created a small watercolor sketch then, hoping to express feelings I could not quite put into words.

In it, I pictured myself in a quiet, gentle embrace, learning how to hold myself with the love and tenderness I had so often waited to receive from others. Around me, I placed sunflowers — my favorite flowers — because I have always loved the way they endure harsh conditions and continue to turn toward the light.

In 2026, I returned to this piece, but I was no longer the same person. I had gone through deeper hardships, and I had come to understand more of myself than I once did. I decided to bring the work onto canvas, giving it a larger space and a greater depth through oil paints, so it could hold everything it had come to mean.

With every layer of color, I poured into it something of my feelings, my exhaustion, and my quiet efforts to rise again. Little by little, the painting became a letter to myself — an embrace I could return to whenever life felt too heavy.

“It’s alright, my brave heart. You have come such a long way, and still, you continue to bloom through everything. I love you, and I will always remain by your side — your greatest support, and your safest refuge.”

This painting is a reminder to be gentler with myself, and to remember that the love we search for in the world is something we, too, deserve to give to ourselves. And that, like sunflowers, we can keep turning toward the light, even after the darkest of days.
