Selections from Guy de Maupassant, by: Guy de Maupassant

Maupassant transmits to us an honest picture of life. He does not pay special attention to analyzing his characters but presents us with people as they are. He shines lights on them that reveal their inner selves without penetrating into their depths; he leaves us this access. And we do not delve into the decisions of their souls because Maupassant's lights have given his characters complete transparency. All we need is to take a look to see everything. He draws for us people from his era and his homeland, but he knew how to make them universal, so they became from every era and every homeland, and we began to see ourselves, the people of the twentieth century, in his delightful stories. He presents to us types of people who represent human nature in every time and place. Number of pages: 359
