The flashy curtain, by: Somerset Maugham

Kiti's spirit was overflowing with happiness and joy, and she did not make any effort to resist that. Those bright scenes with their elegant colors, their unexpected differences, and their strangeness, like the dazzling curtain in front of her, like the mysterious dark shapes playing the role of ghosts in Kiti's imagination. Those scenes were completely imaginary. They were Metan Fu with its serrated walls like a painted canvas hanging on the stage in an old play showcasing a certain city. The nuns, Waddington, and Princess Manchu, wonderful but false characters hiding behind masks. And the rest, the wanderers in the winding streets, who have passed away, were anonymous heroes.
