Charlie Reed, a seventeen-year-old boy, is a high school student and an athlete who plays football and baseball, hoping that his skills in both will help him get a college scholarship. He is also a responsible person; he has taken responsibility for himself and for his father, who fell into the depths of addiction after his wife was killed when she was run over by a truck one day. While passing near a large house at the top of the hill, he heard loud barking. It was not an ordinary bark; it was closer to a cry for help. When Charlie entered the house, he saw that the old owner had fallen from the ladder and broken his leg, so he helped him. Over time, the old man trusted him and brought him closer. When he died, he bequeathed him everything he owned. But there is something special about this house: in its backyard, there is a shed emitting strange sounds. When Charlie inquired about these sounds, the old man told him he would tell him at the right time. The time was right after his death; he left him a recorded tape in which he told him a story that no one could believe, and he left him a key. It is a story about a vast abandoned city, but it is alive. Its streets are empty, its buildings haunted, and its people are gray-skinned. In its sky, two moons are always obscured by clouds. Its rabbits are enormous, and its cockroaches are the size of cats. It has a sundial; whoever sits on it either regains their youth or ages. It is guarded by a giant named Hana. Where is this city located? Why are its people gray-skinned? Why are its animals and insects large? Why do two moons orbit its sky? And what is the connection of all this to Buditch and the boy Charlie?
