The longing for freedom, in all circumstances, is considered a fundamental anthropological given because people's coexistence requires an agreement to give life one meaning. Meanwhile, there is no single life that can be discovered; the Western way of connecting people to each other raises a meaning that is imposed on everyone. Law is the text in which our basic beliefs are written, that is, the power of belief in the meaning of the human being, in the authority of laws, or in the strength of the covenant. Since law is not an expression of an absolute truth or a scientific discovery, it appears as a technique that can serve various and changing goals, whether in the history of political systems or the history of sciences and technologies; but it is a technique of prohibition that gives a shared meaning to each individual's relationships with others and with the world, which transcends and binds them. Each of us truly needs to be assured of the existence of a system that grants meaning to our life and work.
