This book offers an ethical analysis of the reasons for objection to inequality, because inequality is morally objectionable. Inequality can be objectionable for one of the following reasons: the failure of one of the agents to fulfill their obligation to provide some benefit to all citizens; the rich and the poor, and to care for their interests equally; the inequalities involved in social status that are objectionable; that inequality grants the wealthy unacceptable forms of control over the lives of those with lower income; that inequality conflicts with procedural fairness by economic institutions, as well as depriving some of the objective opportunity to participate in those institutions; that inequality conflicts with the integrity of political institutions; and finally, that inequality in wealth and income is unfair. The book reviews what these reasons imply about ideas of equality. It addresses objections to the pursuit of equality on the grounds that it conflicts with individual freedom. It emphasizes that ideas of deservingness do not provide a basis for justifying or objecting to noticeable economic disparity.
