Tips for preventing bed sores in the elderly:

Bed ulcers occur in the elderly as a result of the exposure of the skin to constant pressure between the bed and the bones, which results in a lack of blood flow to the skin, and also as a result of lying down for long periods, which results in poor ventilation of the skin, so the infection of bed sores can be prevented in the following points:
- Continuous change of positions, this is every two hours if the patient spends most of the time in bed and every 15 minutes if the patient is immobile or wheelchair use.
- Lie on your side at a 30-degree angle
- Using special beds and mattresses to reduce the pressure on the skin.
- Do not place pillows under the knee because this reduces the blood perfusion of the feet.
- Use foam or gel pillows that reduce pressure on the skin but do not replace constant change of positions.
- Daily examination of the skin, whether from the patient himself or a family member, and focusing on the places exposed to pressure.
- If you notice a change in skin color, such as redness, you should relieve pressure on this area, clean it thoroughly, and apply a rash protection cream.
- If an unpleasant odor, hardness in the skin or heat appears in the affected area, you should consult a specialist doctor to dispense the appropriate treatment.
- Paying attention to the patient's healthy nutrition because in most cases, whether the patient is old or in the process of convalescence, he suffers from poor appetite and lack of desire for food, so attention must be paid to the necessary nutrition for the patient during that period.
- If the patient has diabetes, intensive care and continuous follow-up with the treating doctor should be ensured.
- Continuous massage of places exposed to pressure.
