Tips for preventing bedsores in the elderly: Bedsores in the elderly occur due to continuous pressure on the skin between the mattress and bones, resulting in reduced blood flow to the skin. Prolonged lying down also contributes to poor skin ventilation. The following points can help prevent bedsores: 1- Change positions frequently, every two hours if the patient spends most of their time in bed, and every 15 minutes if the patient is immobile or uses a wheelchair. 2- Lie on your side at a 30-degree angle. 3- Use special mattresses and beds to reduce pressure on the skin. 4- Avoid placing pillows under the knees, as this reduces blood flow. 5. For the feet: Use foam or gel pads to reduce pressure on the skin, but these do not replace the need for frequent positioning. 6. Daily skin examination, either by the patient or a family member, focusing on areas subject to pressure. 7. If you notice a change in skin color, such as redness, relieve pressure on the affected area, clean it thoroughly, and apply a cream to protect against rashes. 8. If an unpleasant odor, hardening of the skin, or heat appears in the affected area, consult a doctor for appropriate treatment. 9. Ensure the patient has a healthy diet, as in most cases, whether the patient is elderly or in recovery, they suffer from a loss of appetite and a lack of desire to eat. Therefore, it is essential to provide the necessary nutrition during this period. 10. If the patient has diabetes, intensive care and continuous follow-up with the treating physician are necessary. 11. Regularly massage the areas subject to pressure.
