Its roots are extensive and deep, making it one of the most tolerant and drought-resistant trees. Its seeds are very rich in oil, and its wood has high economic value. It reproduces by seeds. Its native habitat is Africa. The African mahogany grows in riverine forests and upper savannas. The tree has a deep root system, with growth concentrated in the first year of its age in developing its roots that extend deeply, making it one of the most drought-resistant trees. The Khaya tree is threatened by overexploitation of its wood. Economic value: the wood is reddish-brown in color, heavy, durable, solid enough to withstand wear, yet easy to work with, accepts polishing and finishing easily, and is used in furniture making, musical instruments, carpentry, carts, ships, boats, boxes, and packaging. The tree grows well in good lands with an annual rainfall of 40-50 inches. The seeds of the tree are very rich in oil, 67%, which contains a high percentage of oleic acid and is used in West Africa for cooking as well as in cosmetic products. The bark of the tree is used for a variety of medicinal purposes, including treating fever caused by malaria and stomach diseases, and is applied externally to treat skin rashes and wounds.
