African lavender tree, African tulip. Scientific name: Spathodea campanulata. It is cultivated as an ornamental tree, along roadsides, and as a shade tree as well. It is one of the beautiful trees worldwide. The African lavender tree is distinguished by its beautiful appearance and the splendor of its dark red flowers. Many painters and artists visit this tree to draw or sing about it for its stunning look and enchanting flowers. It is considered a strong tree that does not require care and maintenance. It grows quickly and blooms rapidly, starting to flower at only 1 meter tall. The African lavender tree grows and blooms fast, especially in spring. It is planted for sun protection in public gardens, and the trees remain flowering for 5-6 months. It is suitable for indoor cultivation due to its tolerance of indirect light. The wood of the African lavender tree is soft and flexible. Parts of the tree have medicinal benefits for skin diseases, as a purifier, and antimicrobial. The flowers open like cups and retain rainwater inside, attracting many types of birds. Hummingbirds sip its nectar because of the softness of its wood, and birds use it to build nests after pecking. It is edible and used in many African regions. Its wood is used to make drums and carve on due to its flexibility. The hard part of the fruit is used as a toxic substance to kill insects. The bark of the tree contains a disinfectant and natural laxative. Seeds, flowers, and roots are used as medicine, and the bark is chewed to make a mask for swollen faces. Boiled water is used to remove skin inflammation in newborns. Soil type: It grows well in all types of soil. Blooming time: The African lavender tree blooms throughout the year in areas with continuous drought or winter season. Propagation: It propagates through seeds. Method of planting the African lavender tree: 1- Prepare the soil (peat moss) and mix it with your hands until the peat moss becomes crumbly. Fill nursery trays with the mixture without tilling or compressing the soil or peat moss. Water the soil and let it drain; the soil should be moist but not soaked. 2- Evenly place the seeds of the African lavender tree on the surface of the soil in each cavity of the tray. Do not press the seed, then cover it lightly with a thin layer of peat moss no more than 1 cm or less. Water it using a spray bottle to mist the surface of the soil. 3- Remove the plastic covers from the seed trays when the seeds sprout. Remove the weaker seedlings to give space for the stronger plants to develop. Cut the seedlings at soil level with scissors, as pulling dead seedlings can damage nearby good roots. Keep the soil moist until the seedlings reach about 2 to 3 inches tall and have two leaves. 4- Select the strongest seedlings to transplant into a pot for outdoor growth. African lavender trees can also be grown indoors in a sunny place. Plant small seedlings one in each pot, using 8-inch pots for your new seedlings, then transfer them to larger pots as the plants mature. When the tree reaches about 2 feet tall, the potted plant can be moved to a sunny outdoor location.
