The Great Lakes Coffee team works hard to improve the quality of coffee from an area that is known for selling one of the lowest quality and affordable Arabica coffee selections. They developed a unique farmer training program where the training team established a farmer with a leadership role from the community and provided in-depth training in agronomy, processing and harvesting. They then assign 35 small farmers to each lead farmer. These small groups are evaluated through the financial reward per unit, the higher the quality of the coffee, the higher the wage of the working group. The leader farmer gets an added bonus for the additional training he does to his colleagues as an incentive and to ensure the knowledge he passes on efficiently.
cherry red program
It is the next stage for the gradual quality improvement that has taken place in recent years. This program focuses on quality first and foremost by instructing farmers to select only ripe cherries, then dry the coffee on raised beds, and after the coffee is dried, it is sent to the dry processing plant to remove defects and provide a clean cup.
There are now approximately 1,320 small farmers in the program, which is providing them with sufficient attention and support so that the business can be expanded to 4,400 people over the next two years.
