Main Signs of a Faulty Automatic Fan Clutch in a Car

1. Engine Overheating

If the temperature gauge starts to rise, especially when idling or driving slowly, the fan clutch may not be engaging the fan properly when needed.

2. Constant Loud Air Noise or “Whirring” Sound

If the fan is always running at full speed even when the engine is cold, it indicates the clutch is stuck in the engaged position.

3. Fan Spins Too Freely When the Engine is Hot

After turning off a hot engine, if the fan spins too easily by hand, it’s a sign that the clutch is weak and not gripping properly.

4. Weak A/C Performance at Idle

Since the air conditioning relies on the fan to pull air through the condenser, a faulty clutch that doesn’t engage the fan properly will cause weaker cooling, especially when the car is stopped.

5. Vibration or Clicking Noises

A worn bearing inside the fan clutch may cause vibrations or clicking sounds during fan operation.
