Product description
Gulf meadow – Prosopis cineraria
Common name: Ghaf Tree. Family: Legumes (Fabaceae).
the introduction
The ghaf tree ( Prosopis cineraria ) is a long-lived desert tree native to parts of the Arabian Peninsula, the Indian subcontinent, and surrounding regions. It is characterized by its high tolerance to heat and drought, its fine, pinnately compound leaves, its branching twigs, and its grayish-brown bark. It produces small, yellowish-green flowers clustered in cylindrical inflorescences, followed by slender seed pods containing the seeds. It is an ecologically important tree in desert regions, providing shade, improving soil quality, and supporting biodiversity.
☀️ Lighting (Light)
It prefers direct sunlight and grows best in open locations that receive sunlight for most of the day. It tolerates high temperatures and strong solar radiation and is well-suited to sunny desert environments. Insufficient light may lead to stunted growth and reduced crown density.
💧 Irrigation (Watering)
Young seedlings require relatively regular watering during the establishment phase, allowing the soil to partially dry out between waterings. Once established, the tree is highly drought-tolerant thanks to its ability to access moisture in deeper soil layers. Deep watering is preferred when needed, while avoiding overwatering and constant waterlogging around the roots.
🌱 Soil & Growing Medium
It adapts to various soil types, including sandy, gravelly, and loamy soils, and tolerates alkaline soils and some saline conditions. Well-draining soil that allows for root aeration is preferred, while heavy, poorly draining soils should be avoided. When growing in pots during its early stages, a well-aerated and well-draining potting mix is recommended.
🌿 Fertilizing
It does not usually require intensive fertilization when grown in suitable soil, as it is a legume capable of forming symbiotic relationships with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. A diluted, balanced fertilizer can be used if signs of nutrient deficiency appear or when growing in a nutrient-limited medium, while avoiding over-fertilization.
🌳 Growth Habit
A perennial desert tree, it typically grows to a height of 5 to 10 meters, but can reach larger sizes under suitable conditions. It features a wide, spreading crown, branching limbs, and small, pinnate compound leaves that help it adapt to drought. It has deep roots that allow it to access water in the lower soil layers, and it produces thin, elongated pods when mature. It grows relatively slowly and is well-suited to desert gardens and open areas with ample space for root and crown expansion.
⚠️ Toxicity & Safety
Some parts of the mesquite tree are traditionally used for culinary and medicinal purposes, but the safety of the part used and the method of preparation should be verified before consumption. It is advisable not to consume any part of the plant for food or medicinal purposes without reliable information, and caution should be exercised when handling branches and pods during pruning or harvesting.
