Product description

Juniper (Juniperus procera) is a long-lived, evergreen tree belonging to the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is a characteristic tree of the mountainous regions of the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa. It is distinguished by its aromatic fragrance and durable wood, and it is relatively tolerant of mountainous conditions and drought. It plays an important role in protecting the soil and maintaining mountain ecosystems.

General Description

It grows as a large, upright tree, reaching a height of about 20–30 meters under suitable conditions, and even higher in some locations. It is characterized by a strong trunk and a conical or broad crown, depending on the tree's age and growing conditions. Large trees may take on irregular shapes in mountainous areas that are highly exposed to wind.

Papers

Its leaves are needle-like or scale-like depending on the age of the branches, and range in color from dark green to grayish-green. They have a distinct aromatic scent when rubbed. The evergreen nature of the leaves helps sustain photosynthesis during the appropriate times of the year.

Flowers and cones

Juniper is a predominantly dioecious plant, with male and female reproductive organs found on separate trees. The female trees produce small, fleshy, berry-like cones that turn from green to dark blue or black when ripe, and contain the seeds.

Fruits and seeds

It produces spherical or nearly spherical fruit cones, typically 5–10 mm in size, which turn dark when mature. These cones contain hard seeds, which are naturally dispersed by birds and animals that feed on them.

Endurance and suitability

Juniper is known for its ability to withstand mountainous conditions, drought, and wind, and it thrives in high-altitude areas with relatively mild to cold climates. It requires well-drained soil and can also grow in rocky soils and on mountain slopes.

Uses

Juniper is of great ecological importance in stabilizing the soil and reducing erosion, and it provides shelter and food for many wildlife. Its wood is traditionally used in some areas for construction, furniture, and tools, and some trees are cultivated for ornamental purposes and to preserve mountain vegetation.

natural spread

Juniperus procera is naturally found in the mountainous highlands of East Africa, and its range extends into southwestern Arabia, particularly the mountainous regions of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman. It is especially associated with highlands and rocky areas with a mountainous climate.

Preservation status

Juniperus procera is classified globally as Least Concern (LC) according to available conservation assessments; however, some local populations may be under pressure due to drought, climate change, grazing, logging, and habitat degradation. Conserving natural juniper forests is crucial for protecting biodiversity and mountain ecosystems.
