Memoirs of the Last Mice of the Earth (Mouse Literature) - A Collection of Stories
The literary heritage is full of diverse arts, and animal literature is one of them, which has occupied those interested since ancient times. Perhaps the most prominent is the Book of Animals by Al-Jahiz. Animal literature's importance lies not only in its marvelousness but also in the messages and signals it contains and hides behind it. Therefore, it is no wonder that the book "Kalila and Dimna," translated by Ibn al-Muqaffa, holds great significance in Arab heritage.
One year, I was struck by a word spoken by someone in a cultural forum, a word that occupied my thoughts for years: "Mouse Literature." I remained in a state of contemplation and thinking, searching for any trace or specific work related to this genre of literature in the art of short stories or storytelling heritage, but I found little, such as the story of "The Lion and the Mouse," and other stories that Al-Jahiz dedicated to in his book "Animals," in which he included a chapter describing mouse behaviors and related news and poetry. It is a general book on literature, culture, and jurisprudence.
Because traditional arts are a passion of mine, they took up a significant part of my interest, and from there came the idea of this collection.
And the question arises: Why mice specifically? This is an important question.
Aren't mice living in our houses, sharing our homes and food? Sometimes we see them as thieves, and other times as experimental mice, making sacrifices under the scalpel of researchers, doctors, and scientists for their research to develop the latest medicines and beneficial drugs for humans, simply because they resemble humans anatomically and biologically.
Mice have entered the world of Arab proverbs and mythology; behind them flows the stream of 'al-'Amr,' and they have reshaped the Arabian Peninsula. Behind them, also, the great philosopher Al-Farabi discovered a new world of music.
Always, this elusive and pressing question haunts my mind and thoughts: Do mice have a necessity?
