What is Propolis? Propolis is a resinous substance with a color tending to greenish-brown. It is produced by bees through collecting tree bark and resinous materials. It is processed by them after collection, relying on special methods, most notably secreting some substances from their abdomens. Bees use Propolis as a means to stabilize their hives, support them, and seal holes they encounter. They also use it as a protective shield to prevent fungi and germs from infiltrating the hive.
Propolis components: The components of Propolis vary depending on the geographic location, and thus the types of trees and flowers in the area where the bees feed. Propolis consists of a group of essential materials, including: a percentage of unsaturated aromatic acids, flavonoids (antioxidants responsible for most of the therapeutic benefits of Propolis), 55% resinous substances, beeswax at about 30%, volatile aromatic oils up to 10%, and pollen at 5%.
Properties and benefits: Propolis has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, Propolis has uses in various fields such as wound healing, as it contains a compound called pinocembrin that helps accelerate wound and burn healing by forming healthy new cells, reducing bleeding, and limiting it through tissue and cell formation. It also treats ulcers and boosts the body's immunity.
Method of use: Propolis can be taken by mixing it with honey (20 grams of Propolis in half a kilo of honey). It can be taken directly orally once a day in a dose of 1-2 grams. Alternatively, it can be dissolved in a glass of water (2 grams in 500 ml of water).
