Croton Plant
Croton (Codiaeum variegatum) is native to the Sunda Islands in tropical Asia. Its leaves vary in shape, color, and size, and can reach up to 1 meter in height, so it is best displayed as a standalone plant.
The plant produces a milky, sticky sap that is toxic, so care should be taken when handling it, especially around children.
Care
Place it in bright, filtered light for most of the year. During winter, it is preferable to place it near a sunny window.
Water thoroughly and fertilize every two weeks during the growing season. In winter, reduce watering to a moderate level, as this is the plant's dormant period.
Normal room temperature is suitable for most of the year. During winter, the temperature should preferably not fall below 12°C.
Croton prefers high humidity, so misting the leaves during periods of intense heat can help refresh the plant and may also help remove some pests.
Propagation
Croton can be propagated using 10 cm stem cuttings during spring. Rooting hormone can be used, and the cuttings should be planted in peat moss soil in a pot suitable for their size.
It can also be propagated through air layering. This involves making a vertical cut on the section of the stem intended for rooting, covering it with soil, and leaving it until the following winter before separating it from the parent plant.
Watering
Water only when the soil has partially dried out. It is recommended to mist the leaves regularly, as the plant prefers humid conditions.
Lighting
It requires bright, filtered light, such as light from a window or artificial indoor lighting.
Temperature
It prefers a moderate environment and normal room temperature, and can tolerate warm conditions of up to 30°C.
