Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim -may Allah have mercy on him- said in "The Gift of the Gifted with the Rules of the Newly Born" about the responsibility of parents in raising their children: "Some scholars said: Allah the Almighty will ask the father about his son on the Day of Resurrection, before He asks the son about his father, because just as the father has a right over his son, so does the son have a right over his father. So, God's advice to fathers regarding their children precedes the children's advice to their fathers. Whoever neglects to teach his son what benefits him and leaves him idle has done the worst of wrongs. Most children’s corruption comes from the fathers, neglecting them, and leaving them without teaching them the obligations and Sunnahs of religion. They wasted them when they were young, so they did not benefit themselves, nor did they benefit their fathers when they grew up. As some have reproached their son for disobedience, saying: 'Oh my father, you disowned me when I was young, so I disowned you when I grew up, and I wasted you as a child, so I wasted you as an elder.'" And from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "It is enough of a sin for a man to waste those who provide his livelihood."
