As soon as Lily and her ex-husband Ryle settled into a fixed routine for caring for their daughter Emerson, Lily coincidentally met her former lover Atlas, after two years from their last encounter. Atlas was overwhelmed with joy, thinking that the time had become right to give themselves a real chance to exchange love, so he offered Lily a date. Lily's enthusiasm quickly waned in the face of her sense of awe and anxiety, as she remembered that her ex-husband Ryle still held an influential place in her life. Perhaps Ryle would not like Lily to date any man other than him, but Atlas Corgan specifically remains the man who would not tolerate his presence, near or far, in his former wife's and her infant daughter's life. The story is narrated from Lily's and Atlas's alternating perspectives, giving the reader a deeper insight into Atlas's past life, while he reconnects with Lily and rekindles the love story that brought them together in their teenage years. Meanwhile, he tries to navigate her former husband's path, who is ready to explode at any moment and sees Atlas as a significant reason for his divorce from Lily.
