Follow a 7-step plan with reference points along the way for those who find it hard to remember the key points!
1. Heart rate - provides a quick but approximate heart rate.
2. Rhythm - assess whether the heart rate is regular or irregular.
3. Axis - quick reference for deviation of the normal, left, or right axis. Upward arrows indicate positive deviation, downward arrows indicate negative deviation.
4. Relevant interval - this gives you a reference for the range of the relevant function in milliseconds. Also on the right side, there are blocks you can measure PRI with.
5. QRS interval - as mentioned above, it gives you the QRS and QTc range in milliseconds, and you can again measure the QRS interval using the blocks.
6. ST elevation/depression - place the straight backline along the electrical line to assess whether there is ST elevation or depression, and there is a ruler so you can measure the degree in millimeters.
7. T wave - finally, a quick reference for potential T wave abnormalities. Additionally, the top right indicates views of the heart channels, which are useful when identifying the area of myocardial infarction.
Remember: V1-V4 = Anteroseptal MI & V3-V6 = Anterolateral MI
