Memories of Günter Grass - Peeling the onion in 1945, and with the escape of the German army known as the Wehrmacht, a German soldier named Günter Grass hid in a basement in what would later be called East Germany, and as fighting broke out from house to house in the village, his unit received an order to ride hanging bicycles from the ceiling and to carry out a miserable attack. As for Grass, who never learned to ride a bicycle, he remained in the basement to cover his comrades with fire, then went on to watch the scene as the Russian machine guns turned his comrades into a heap of corpses.
