When Al-Mutanabbi said "And how many times in Egypt there are laughters, but they are like crying," he was expressing a deep metaphor about the paradoxes of laughter. Laughter is not a singular state but always to be imagined in the plural form. It does not only express happiness but also other conditions that may be sarcasm, violence, saving face, and others. Laughter is an emotional state that may express the self or may be different from its psychological state. In this sense, it expresses both happiness and suffering. Conversely, there are situations that evoke laughter. This evocation may have a social or political dimension. In situations marked by oppression, people resort to laughter as a release for themselves and as criticism of their conditions. When laughter expresses joy, it has a therapeutic character, and when it expresses discontent, it has a critical and oppositional dimension. Therefore, laughter has become an art with its strategies, mechanisms, and creators, whether in literature, cinema, or theater, and this is known as the art of jest.
