Overview of the novel George Amado's magnificent epic deals with the beginnings that require a lot of patience, effort, and struggle, and about the sacrifices and arduous work carried out by workers, which are usually forgotten after the construction is completed and it becomes present for use and investment. In the celebration of the centenary of transforming the city of "Tocaya Grande" into a modern, beautiful, and luminous city, the writer felt injustice and distortion... of the truth and its falsification, as this venerable Brazilian city has foundations that he did not mention, a history he ignored, and men he did not know, who built it and were its makers and creators. This injustice prompted him to investigate the roots of the establishment, the denying depths, and to shed light on its dark face: "I want to reveal the dark face and illuminate it, that face which they erased from the course of history with malice and ingratitude." The novel, therefore, talks about "Tocaya Grande" created by three "Lebanese, Indian, and Zanj" (African descent), which the Brazilian writer embedded his entire bias in favor of the poor and the oppressed on earth, showing their love for them, and coloring it with his poetic and legendary sense. In his pursuit of justice and a new human system, the writer exposes all masks and all curtains that hide the truths from humans, and exposes all passions that try to manipulate them, control their fates, and all possibilities of human control over humans, as well as exposing "the ambition, vulgarity, and laws of the civilized human." A comprehensive, fertile, and rich novel, in which the writer placed his long life experience, recorded the maturity of his conclusions, the harvest of his constant struggle, and his human stance. "I say no" when they say "yes": and with a single unchanging voice, I want to reveal the dark face and illuminate it, that face which they erased from the course of history with malice and ingratitude, I want to delve into the depths of the denying beginning, and sense patience and endurance in building through struggle and blood, and the ability to confront violence and control it, and I want to expose the ambition, vulgarity, and laws of the "civilized" human... and I speak about licentious love as long as the pillar of virtue has not yet risen... I say "no" when they say "yes," and I have no other oath.
