George Bataille divided his book on eroticism into two main sections, the first dedicated to discussing eroticism as an inner experience, and this in its complex relationships with other life experiences such as death. The field of eroticism is, by definition, a domain of violence and transgression. The second section contains miscellaneous studies on the same subject, collected by Bataille and included in his book. George Bataille sees eroticism as human sexual activity. Sexual activity is therefore considered erotic when it is not animalistic, but Bataille emphasized that the transition that enabled humans to separate from animals remains unknown to us; we do not know exactly when and how this happened. We only know that when humans made tools, they left the animal world thanks to work, which certainly allowed them to acquire daily sustenance and some luxuries. But the world of work was characterized by rationality, contrary to the world in which humans lived before engaging in productive activities, which brought with it a series of taboos that must be observed. Among the forbidden topics was sexual life. While we almost know, based on studies of prehistoric times, the period when humans invented tools, and we have access to drawings and representations from that time indicating that the taboo related to death was present from that era, the taboo of sexuality was not necessarily as old, although it could only appear under conditions where humans began preparing to enter an organized world governed by rules and prohibitions that had to enclose the world of work and prevent chaos stemming from violence manifested in sex, as death also takes on the most horrible consequences.
