It seems George Babette, a real estate broker, has a thriving business, and a socially successful man. He has everything one wishes for: health, family, and a profitable job in a rapidly growing city in the American Midwest. Babette suffers from insomnia caused by a disturbance in his self-satisfaction due to the limited life he lives. A personal crisis pushes him to reconsider his values, rebel against social customs, and endanger his reputation, social status, and marital life. Babette is considered Louis's best novel, and this satire of the American social scene caused a big stir when published in 1922. Babette's name has become synonymous with the middle class's satisfaction with itself.
