What is mate: Mate is a medium-sized tree, its height ranges between 4-8 meters, and its original homeland is Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil.
How to prepare mate: The drink is prepared from dried leaves of the mate herb soaked in hot water. The drink is served using a straw that has different names in various countries, and this straw is made of silver but may be made of nickel.
The method of preparing mate varies from region to region, but the traditional way involves using a gourd, which is filled with the herb or hot water is added (below 70-80 degrees Celsius) not boiling.
The gourd is filled halfway to three-quarters with the herb, as adding more mate results in less mate, and reducing it results in more mate, and both cases are undesirable.
Other herbs may be added for flavor or health benefits.
Drinking mate is like coffee or tea and has been classified as a safe herbal drink.
Part used from the mate plant: The leaves, which resemble tea leaves, and small branches, are spread out to dry, then crushed after drying to become small leaves.
Chemical composition of mate: Volatile essential oil, mate acid, sugars, resinous and tannic substances.
Main components of mate: Caffeine, which makes up about 3% of the leaves, and it also contains mineral salts like iron, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, and B complex vitamins, unlike other drinks that contain caffeine alone, such as tea, coffee, and Nescafe, so it is considered a healthy beverage compared to the aforementioned drinks.
Benefits of mate:
1- The mate drink is a stimulant for the heart and nerves, similar to coffee and tea, as it contains caffeine, the famous stimulant (a cup of mate contains about 50 mg of this stimulant, roughly the same amount as in a cup of tea). Unlike coffee and tea, it energizes muscles and nerves, relieves headaches and migraines, eases breathing, and helps workers and athletes endure fatigue, walking, and exhaustion without causing addiction.
2- Historically, mate has been considered a drink that aids digestion, suppresses appetite, and acts as a diuretic, so it is recommended for use with weight loss programs without fear of addiction.
3- For colds, due to its high vitamin C content, mate helps treat people suffering from colds and influenza, so they should drink about 3 cups of mate tea to get a large amount of vitamin C and recover from colds and runny noses.
4- Before menstruation, scientists say that diuretic substances help reduce bloating and water retention before the period, so women should drink mate tea before menstruation to treat some problems they experience.
Nutritional facts about mate:
1- Due to its high caffeine content, drinking more than 3 cups daily is harmful to health, in addition to containing tannin (a constricting substance), which is not recommended in cases of constipation and sluggish intestines, as it may worsen the condition.
2- Many studies have proven the effect of this herb in fighting cancer cell activity.
3- Nutrition experts advise that pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with esophageal cancer should avoid drinking mate to prevent side effects. Also, anyone experiencing stomach pain or severe diarrhea should reduce or completely stop consuming mate.
4- The benefits and harms of mate: it should not be given to children under twelve years old.
