In the month of Jumada al-Akhirah of the year 642 AH, our master was walking back from the school of cotton sellers to the house, riding with full dignity and reverence, satisfied with the teaching, famous, and the students and disciples walking in his footsteps on foot in submission. Suddenly, an unknown passerby, a wool merchant from the people of the bazaar, stopped on the road, holding the reins of that famous teacher's animal, and the scholar, full of grandeur, looked into his eyes. He asked him a question, with a tense voice and high tone: "Who is greater, the scholar of the meaning, Muhammad, peace be upon him, or Bayazid al-Bistami?"
