But she is shocked one day upon hearing a conversation between her parents, in which her father compares her to Vittoria, the ugly and despicable aunt. Thus begins Giovanna's search for Vittoria in the lower streets of Naples, tinged with vulgarity and baseness. Between the top and bottom, Giovanna swings, sometimes falling and sometimes climbing, exposing the false adult life, breathlessly seeking answers that may inspire a way to salvation. Elena Ferrante "Perhaps she is the best writer of novels in our time. Her literature is as transparent as glass, her stories are primal and deep at the same time."
