Author's name: Grazia Deledda Publisher: Al-Takween for Publishing and Distribution Year of publication: 2017 Literary classification: Novel Brief about the book: Grazia Deledda (1871-1936) novelist, poet, and playwright, known for her prolific literary production, gained fame in Italy and around the world until she became in 1926 the second woman in the world to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, in recognition of her literature which notably exemplified noble values and the ability to deeply and warmly depict the reality of life and humans. In the context of the award presentation speech: "In Deledda's novels, we find more than in others a unique unity between humans and nature, so much so that one could say that the humans in her novels are a plant species growing in the soil of Sardinia. Most of her protagonists are simple farmers, primitive in feelings and ideas, but they possess much of the grandeur of nature's construction in Sardinia, and some of them rival the giants of Old Testament characters in magnitude. Her novels have impressed Italian and international celebrities such as Giovanni Verga, Dr. H. Lawrence, who wrote an introduction to the English translation of her novel 'Mother,' and Maxim Gorky, who advised a young Russian literary figure to emulate Deledda and her literature."
