The Long Shadow Owner or my tall-legged father is a novel by American author Jane Webster. The story revolves around an orphan girl named Judy Abbott, who receives a scholarship to study at Lincoln High School from a person she does not know, whose pseudonym is John Smith, and she invented the name "The Long Shadow Owner" for him. She could not see him or thank him, only saw his long shadow. The only condition that Smith stipulated for Judy in exchange for the scholarship is that she correspondence with him once a month, without necessarily expecting a reply from him to her messages. The story narrates three years of Judy's life, starting from her departure from the orphanage until her graduation from high school. The story revolves around the most important characters of the novel: Judy Abbott: a smart and cheerful girl whose parents died when she was a small child, and she grew up in an orphanage where she developed her talent for writing. Sally MacBride: a shy but charming girl, who lives with Judy in the same room at school, and they develop a strong friendship. Julia Pendleton: a wealthy student who also lives with Judy in the same room, but unlike Sally MacBride, her relationship with Judy is somewhat tense after she tried to reveal Judy's secret in front of the schoolgirls, and she is infatuated with Jimmy MacBride, Sally's older brother. Joanna Sloan: the director of the dormitory where Judy lives. Gervas Pendleton: Julia Pendleton's uncle. Judy met him during her high school years. Walter Griggs: the secretary of The Long Shadow Owner or John Smith. Jimmy MacBride: Sally MacBride's older brother and a member of Princeton University's football team. Bob: Jimmy's friend and a member of Princeton University's football team, and he is the team captain. He appears to be shy and hesitant but brave and kind, and he is fond of Sally, and she reciprocates his feelings.
