The novel "Wine and Bread" was born in the thirties after the novel "Fontamara," and after Inyatso Silone distanced himself from communism and began living in a crisis of a person who believed in a certain kind of revolution, then the true face of it was revealed to him. It was an ongoing conscience crisis, which grew in parallel with the growth of his literary talent that began to deepen and take root within himself. The novel "Wine and Bread" was written at the height of the fascist and Nazi era. But the revised Italian version was not published until after the war in 1955, preceded by an English edition, a German edition, and another Italian edition in Switzerland.
