Together, the books Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë and Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë were published by the same publisher, Thomas Cautley Newby, in December 1847. The books formed a set of three volumes; two of them for Wuthering Heights, and one for Agnes Grey. This format was known as a trilogy, and it was especially popular in the mid-19th century, particularly among publishers, who charged three times the fees from the widespread bookstores, which were among their main clients. While Wuthering Heights is praised worldwide, we find that Agnes Grey does not receive nearly enough recognition. And while it is completely different from Anne’s bold and dramatic novel from Wildfell Hall, I find Agnes Grey, in my opinion, to be just as wonderful. In fact, I know I am not alone in seeing that Agnes Grey is one of the most underappreciated books, so why do I love it so much?
