(Al-Istithkar) Explanation of Al-Muwatta by the Hafiz Ibn Abd al-Barr. The book Al-Istithkar has been verified based on more than ten manuscript copies. Although we excuse all of them for the delay in its release despite their frequent urging and insistence on us to hasten the publication throughout the past years, we hope that what they see as a service to this valuable work will be a means of acceptance for our delay in publishing it. And praise be to Allah, the book Al-Istithkar has not been fully published in a manner befitting it as in our edition, so we hope it will be well received, as we are accustomed to with you in our publications, especially what is verified by the Scientific Office of the Dar. We have been keen to track all copies of the books, as we learned from all the manuscript repositories worldwide, of all sizes, small and large, and we examined them carefully to produce the best possible version of Al-Istithkar in accordance with the original text. We also, to the best of our ability and to enrich its scientific content, added commentary on the material of the book from a hadith science perspective, independently evaluating the raised hadiths and judging their chains of narration. Due to the importance of the book from a jurisprudential and evidentiary perspective, and its use in supporting and citing juristic opinions with the sayings of the Companions and the Tabi‘un, we distinguished our edition by paying special attention to the effects contained in the book, verifying them, and judging the mursal chains of narration for the Companions. Linguistically, we also took care to verify poetry and strange words or those needing clarification, and we created several indexes to help students of knowledge benefit from it.
