Added to this is what he sought of means to gain supporters through what he offered of allocations, and what characterized him of forgiving his opponents' mistakes, and what he adhered to of Islamic rulings in his policies, in addition to his fame for generosity and chivalry. However, Salah al-Din did not underestimate the danger of his Crusader opponents; rather, he realized that to defeat them, it was necessary to unite the Muslims, organize the army and fleet, provide financial resources, and carry out comprehensive economic and administrative reforms. Salah al-Din benefited from his experiences in fighting the Crusaders, and from the various political currents that influenced the Crusaders' situation, and from uncovering the factors of their weakness. He continued to encourage trade with Italian cities and was able to obtain the necessary war and combat tools, and prevent the Crusaders from using part of the Italian ships to transport soldiers to the Middle East. Despite the internal wars that erupted among the Ayyubid family after Salah al-Din, and despite the external dangers faced by the Ayyubid possessions from the Mongols and Crusaders, the measures taken by Salah al-Din to establish Islamic unity benefited his successors from the Ayyubids, and the Mamluk sultans who came after them in fighting the Crusaders and the Mongols.
