  • Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or a special type of chest pain called angina, including a rare form called Prinzmetal or variant angina.
  • In patients with high blood pressure, the drug works by widening blood vessels, so that blood can pass through them more easily.
  • In patients with angina, amlodipine works by improving blood flow to the heart muscle, which then receives more oxygen to prevent chest pain.
  • The medicine does not provide immediate relief from chest pain caused by angina.
