What is povidone iodine and what is it used for?

• Povidone-iodine kills a wide range of germs including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and simple organisms. Povidone-iodine is used to prevent and treat skin infections such as cold sores, cuts, wounds, and abrasions.

Do not use povidone iodine:

• If you are allergic to povidone iodine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
• If you currently have or have ever had a thyroid problem, including swelling (nodular goiter, endemic goiter or Hashimoto's thyroiditis), as use of this medicine in these conditions can further affect thyroid function
• If you are currently being treated for depression with lithium because this type of medication can interact with povidone-iodine to affect thyroid function
• For children under 2 years of age.

How to store povidone iodine:

• Flammable: Store away from sources of ignition.
• Keep out of reach and sight of children.
• Do not use povidone-iodine after the expiry date stated on the label. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
• Store below 25°C.
